It’s nearly 2023, so why not try and make some eco conscious resolutions in the New Year?

New Year Resolutions have always been a popular way for many to achieve their goals, but with the climate crisis becoming more pressing, sustainability should be at the forefront of all our minds in 2023. Fortunately, many eco-friendly New Year’s initiatives already exist, such as Veganuary and Big Garden Bird Watch. However, why not set yourself some of your own eco goals for January? This can be a great thing to do if you are not confident to go Vegan for a whole month or if there is a specific aspect of sustainability you would like to work on for January, such as reducing fast fashion purchases. Remember, whatever action you decide to take, big or small, will have a positive effect on our planet and collectively, we can make an impact!

Here are some of my recommendations for eco friendly New Year Resolutions:

Make small personal changes on the day to day:

Individual changes are so important, especially because they can become habits and soon enough you have adopted sustainable activities into your daily routine! Some suggestions for what you could do on a daily basis include: drinking from a reusable water bottle if you don’t already, using less electricity and following more sustainable social media accounts for eco lifestyle tips. Most of these things will help save you money as well!

Go vegetarian or vegan:

Animal agriculture is one of the primary contributors to climate change and so, going vegetarian or vegan is one of the best ways to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation. ‘Veganuary’ is a great resource to use for vegan meal inspiration and contains lots of information on the many benefits of a vegan diet too, if you need help on getting started.

If you are unable to commit to going vegan or vegetarian, you could try and reduce your meat and fish consumption instead. This is a great place to start when considering a vegan or vegetarian diet and will help you transition more seamlessly into veganism or vegetarianism in the future.

Make green purchases by shopping from eco businesses:

Small eco businesses help the planet by supporting their workers with fair wages and only using environmentally friendly premium materials. Most will also support eco initiatives, such as partnering with sustainable organisations to plant a tree with each purchase. Crann uses 100% recycled plastic and wood, that would otherwise end up in landfill or the oceans, and transform it into beautiful sunglasses and watches made to last a lifetime. Crann also helps conserve the local Irish woodlands by partnering with the Native Woodland Trust and donating €2 per product.

These are just a few ways to adopt a more eco conscious lifestyle in 2023! What are your New Year’s Resolutions going to be?
